Masters of Tibetan Medicine

bouudha de médecine
Medicine Buddha

For all fundamental sciences in Tibetan tradition, the “linage” principle is very important. No matter the scientific treatise, wondering about the View of a master, on his / her spiritual filiations and about the subsequent teaching, this is what you call “linage”.

If one scientific tradition trained disciples, it is useful not to have mistakes about meaning in treatises and to have pure transmission. Lacking such a heritage in the View, it would only be imitating the original and it could be hard to completely understand its meaning if, for example, the hidden meaning of a tantra, or the meaning conveyed, should be taken into account or hidden mistakes… That is why the “linage” principle is so crucial.

Tibetan medicines and medical science date back to more than two thousands years, and that is why they appear to be a treasure filled with priceless jewels.

In this long tradition showing the progress in Tibetan medicine over the centuries, not only appeared medical doctrine classics such as the “Four Tantras”, medicinal preparations… but also a good many erudite physicians.

The Therapist Masters linage showed below stretches from Youthog Yonton Gonpo at the 18th to the 5th Dalai Lama. In the middle of this transmission tree, the “Medecine Bouddha” stands. He is surrounded with the traditional Therapist Masters of the linage, which are more than about thirty. Before them, the protectors of medicine stand.
