Theory of the three humours Introduction Tibetan medicine is a traditional system that had been used for more than 2500 years and that is still used practised nowadays. Tibetan medicine is one of the five main sciences in Tibetan tradition, called gSoba Rig-pa, the science of healing. It uses different kind of ingredients like herbs, trees, minerals, resin, sap, etc. Tibetan medicines are effective for all kinds of complaints ; however they are particularly more effective when treating chronic complaints like rheumatism, arthritis, ulcers, chronic digestive troubles, asthma, hepatitis, eczema, liver and sinusitis troubles, anxiety and troubles related to the nervous system. The essential foundations of Tibetan medicines are the three medical humours theory, Nyes-pa gSum. These three humours are rLung (pronounce “Lung”), mKhris-pa (pronounce “Tri-pa”) and Bad-kan – whose only translation is in Sanskrit ; they are thus refered to under their original names. When the three humours are balanced? When the three humours are balanced, then the seven body supports are also balanced. There seven body supports are : _ Essential nutriments Which influence can the three humours have ? If you eat of drink something, this food goes to the stomach. Bad-kan mixes it up, and makes it easier for digestion. Then the Lung helps in separating the nutriments from wastes. The nutritive essence constitutes the blood, the blood essence constitutes the muscular tissues, the essence of muscular tissues constitutes the fat, the essence of fat constitutes the bones, the bones essence constitutes the marrow, the marrow essence constitutes the regenerative fluid. This process shows how vital it is for the three humours to be balanced. Three kinds of wastes are eliminated : _ Faeces
